The Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Abdur-Raheem Abdullah, has departed for India today on an official visit. This marks his first trip to India since assuming office in May 2024.
The visit, scheduled from February 10 to 14, comes at the invitation of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The announcement was made by India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, in December 2024.
Before departing, Speaker Abdur-Raheem initiated the day’s session of the People’s Majlis. He then handed over the chair to Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, the Member for Dhiggaru Constituency, and informed the assembly of his official visit to India.
This visit underscores efforts to strengthen parliamentary relations between the Maldives and neighboring countries. It also provides an opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional issues of mutual interest.
Abdur-Raheem Abdullah, born on April 19, 1967, in Fonadhoo, Laamu Atoll, has been serving as the 21st Speaker of the People’s Majlis since May 28, 2024. He is also the chairperson of the People’s National Congress.
The Speaker’s visit to India aligns with ongoing efforts to foster close relations with the parliaments of neighboring nations.
The outcomes of this visit are anticipated to further enhance the diplomatic and parliamentary ties between the Maldives and India.
