In a gesture underscoring the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Saudi leadership on the occasion of the kingdom’s Founding Day. This annual event, observed on February 22, commemorates the establishment of the first Saudi state.
President Muizzu conveyed his sincere wishes to His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. In a message shared on his official ‘X’ account, he expressed hopes for Saudi Arabia’s continued progress, prosperity, security, and stability.
The diplomatic relationship between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia was formally established on March 17, 1981, during the tenure of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. This bond has been strengthened over the years through mutual cooperation and high-level exchanges. Notably, in February 2014, then-Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz visited the Maldives and generously pledged the construction of ten mosques across the archipelago.
The Maldives inaugurated its embassy in Riyadh on May 12, 2008, marking its first diplomatic mission in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia reciprocated by opening its embassy in Malé on August 2, 2015, further solidifying bilateral ties.
Beyond diplomatic engagements, the two nations have collaborated closely on various fronts, including international issues such as peace and security, climate change, and the promotion of human rights. Saudi Arabia has also played a pivotal role in the Maldives’ development, contributing to infrastructure projects and educational initiatives.
President Muizzu’s recent message not only commemorates Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day but also highlights the deep-rooted and multifaceted relationship between the two countries, reflecting a shared commitment to continued partnership and mutual growth.
