In a significant development amid escalating gang tensions in Malé, a 21-year-old local, Abdulla Udhayyu, has been apprehended on suspicion of orchestrating a retaliatory attack against a rival gang member. The Criminal Court has ordered his detention for 15 days as investigations proceed.
According to court documents, police assert that Udhayyu was actively involved in identifying targets from the opposing faction to execute the planned assault. Authorities also suspect that he resided in a safe house provided by his gang.
The police highlighted that Udhayyu has a prior criminal history and has been present during previous police raids targeting gang activities.
This arrest underscores the persistent issue of gang violence in Malé. Recent reports indicate that there are between 20 and 30 gangs operating in the capital, with memberships ranging from 50 to 400 individuals per group. These gangs are often involved in drug trafficking, political violence, and other criminal activities.
Authorities have identified eight gangs as being “highly active” in the Malé region, with a concerning number of members being minors. Efforts are underway to intervene and prevent youth involvement in such groups.
The Maldives Police Service has emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of gang violence, including unemployment, drug addiction, and social disparities. Community engagement and targeted interventions are deemed crucial in curbing the influence of gangs and ensuring public safety.
As the investigation into Udhayyu’s alleged activities continues, the authorities reaffirm their commitment to dismantling gang networks and preventing retaliatory violence that threatens the peace and security of Malé’s residents.
