MATI 36th AGM: Tourism Leaders Endorse Champa Hussain Afeef as Chairman

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 15, 2026

The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry convened its 36th Annual General Meeting today at Kurumba Maldives, where members elected veteran tourism entrepreneur Champa Hussain Afeef as the new Chairman of the association.

The leadership transition follows the recent passing of former Chairman Mohamed Umar Maniku, widely known as “MU” Maniku, whose seat had remained vacant. Maniku, regarded as one of the architects of the Maldives’ modern tourism industry, led MATI for decades and played a central role in shaping the country into a globally recognised luxury destination.

Champa Hussain Afeef assumes the chairmanship at a defining moment for the sector, as the Maldives continues to strengthen its global competitiveness amid evolving market dynamics and sustainability demands. A long-standing industry figure, Afeef has been closely involved in the expansion of resort operations and private sector advocacy, previously serving in MATI’s senior leadership.

During the AGM, members reviewed the association’s annual activities, financial performance, and strategic direction, while reaffirming MATI’s commitment to safeguarding industry interests and advancing policy dialogue with the government.

The 36th AGM at Kurumba marks a new chapter for the country’s principal tourism body, signalling continuity in leadership while positioning the association to navigate emerging opportunities and challenges in the Maldives’ most vital economic sector.
