In a move to alleviate public concern over fluctuating electricity bills, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced the application of newly reduced electricity tariffs to May 2025 bills. This decision follows President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s directive to lower domestic electricity rates, effective from June 1, 2025.
Despite the implementation of reduced tariffs, some consumers have reported higher May bills compared to April. STELCO attributes this anomaly to the Ramadan discounts applied in April, which temporarily lowered bills. The company explains that the true effect of the new tariff rates will be more evident when comparing May bills to those from December 2024 or January 2025, prior to the Ramadan discount period.
The revised tariff structure is as follows:
- 0–100 units: MVR 1.25 (down from MVR 1.50)
- 101–200 units: MVR 1.50 (down from MVR 1.70)
- 201–300 units: MVR 1.50 (down from MVR 2.15)
- 301–400 units: MVR 1.50 (down from MVR 2.50)
- 401–500 units: MVR 2.66 (down from MVR 2.95)
- 501–600 units: MVR 3.20 (down from MVR 3.55)
- Above 600 units: MVR 3.83 (down from MVR 4.25)
STELCO serves the Greater Malé Region and several atolls, including Alif Dhaal (excluding Maamigili), Vaavu, and Kaafu (excluding Huraa). Fenaka Corporation, the primary electricity provider for over 150 islands, has also confirmed the application of reduced tariffs to May bills. Customers who have already paid their May bills will receive adjustments in their June statements, while those yet to pay will be billed at the new rates.
STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, praised President Muizzu’s initiative, describing it as a historic step toward easing the financial burden on citizens.
Consumers seeking to understand the impact of the new tariffs are encouraged to compare their May bills with those from December 2024 or January 2025, as April’s bills were influenced by Ramadan discounts. This comparison will provide a clearer picture of the savings resulting from the revised rates.
