Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim has strongly urged his party members and all Maldivians to avoid today’s protest organized by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), branding it a reckless attempt to destabilize the nation for political gain.
In a strongly worded statement, the Villa Group Chairman warned that the protest is not motivated by any sincere desire to serve the people. Instead, he described it as a “malicious act” aimed at seizing power through chaos and preventing the government from carrying out its national responsibilities. “This is not constructive. It is destructive. It is a major wrongdoing aimed at seizing power,” Qasim declared.
Highlighting the country’s dire financial situation, Qasim stressed that the Muizzu administration is working tirelessly to pay off the massive debts accumulated under the past three to four governments. He warned that failure to meet these obligations would lead the Maldives toward bankruptcy. “A large portion of every income entering the state is spent on debt repayments. Even with added taxes, the government is making arrangements to protect salaries and keep the nation running” he said.
Qasim also drew attention to the corruption that flourished under previous administrations, including MDP-led governments, noting that they failed to take action against wrongdoers. In contrast, he said, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has consistently warned against corruption, dismissed those implicated, and launched investigations to ensure accountability.
He cautioned that if the MDP succeeds in derailing stability with its protest, the outcome will be nothing but more debt, poverty, and hardship for Maldivians. “Power does not belong to one group or individual. It belongs to the people, in line with religion and law” Qasim stressed.
Calling on citizens to stand firm against destabilization attempts, Qasim urged the people to reject MDP’s destructive agenda and support the government’s efforts to safeguard the nation. “May Allah grant wisdom to the Maldivian people” he concluded.
