The Maldives Meteorology Department (MET Office) has issued an orange alert for the central provinces of the country, as heavy rain and flooding continue to impact various regions.
The alert, which was issued on Saturday, covers the Baa Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll until midnight. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for the Kaafu Atoll to Meemu Atoll, which will remain in effect until 1 a.m. tonight.
According to the MET Office, heavy rain and thundershowers are expected to persist for the next 24 hours, with some areas likely to experience intense rainfall. Winds will be between 10 to 20 mph in the northwest and north, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph in some areas.
The bad weather has already led to localized flooding in the capital, Malé, where the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service has been working to drain water from flooded roads. The MNDF Male’ Area Command troops are actively sandbagging affected areas and providing assistance to residents in need.
The MET Office has advised the public to remain cautious, as seas are expected to be moderately to cloudy. With heavy rainfall expected in various parts of the country, citizens have been urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
The government is closely monitoring the situation, and authorities are working to minimize the impact of the weather on daily life.
