President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated a new water supply and sewerage network on Hoadedhoo Island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, marking a significant step toward improving essential services and infrastructure for the island’s 800 residents.
The development project, launched on June 13, 2022, was funded through a line of credit from the Export-Import Bank of India and executed by India-based Triveni Engineering and Industries Ltd. With a total investment of over USD 4.9 million, the project involved the installation of five pump stations for the sewerage network, a sea outfall system, and an extensive pipe network connecting residential and commercial properties.
Additionally, two reverse osmosis (RO) plants capable of producing 75 tonnes of water daily and two large water storage tanks were installed to ensure a reliable water supply for the community.
For years, Hoadedhoo residents have faced considerable difficulties due to the absence of an adequate sewerage system, particularly during the rainy season. The new infrastructure is expected to significantly alleviate these issues and enhance living standards on the island.
President Muizzu’s visit to Hoadedhoo is part of a broader three-day tour of nine islands across Huvadhu Atoll, including Nadellaa, Vaadhoo, Fiyoari, and Rathafandhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as well as Kanduhulhudhoo, Nilandhoo, Maamendhoo, and Dhevvadhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
The president’s tour aims to foster direct engagement with island communities to understand their concerns, aspirations, and developmental needs. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, including cabinet ministers and members of parliament, President Muizzu has been holding meetings with local councils and Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) to gather insights into the challenges faced by island residents.
During these discussions, the president has also outlined his administration’s commitment to advancing key infrastructure projects and addressing local concerns. This initiative underscores the government’s pledge to prioritize development in the outer atolls and strengthen ties with communities across the nation.
The completion of the water and sewerage network in Hoadedhoo is seen as a crucial milestone in fulfilling this pledge, demonstrating tangible progress in improving public services and enhancing quality of life in the Maldives’ island communities.
