The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has officially launched a harbor upgrade project worth nearly MVR 39 million in the island of Fiyoaree, with the aim of transforming its existing jetty into a fully modern harbor facility.
The commencement of practical work was marked during a ceremony held on Friday evening on the island. The event was attended by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muthalib, MTCC CEO Adam Azim, and MP for Faresmaathodaa Ashraf Rasheed, along with island residents.
According to MTCC, the project includes basin dredging of 26,750 cubic meters, new channel dredging of 18,300 cubic meters, the construction of a 281-meter revetment, a 155-meter groyne, and a 166-meter L-section quay wall. The project also encompasses harbor pavement works and the installation of street lighting to improve functionality and safety.
With a contract value of MVR 38.91 million, the project is expected to significantly improve marine access and support the local economy, particularly benefiting the island’s farming and transport sectors.
Located in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Fiyoaree is home to around 740 residents and is widely recognized as an agricultural hub. The island, which spans approximately 80 hectares, shares its lagoon with 10 nearby uninhabited islands, making it a strategically important location for future development.
The harbor upgrade is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance infrastructure and boost connectivity in outer islands, enabling smoother transport of goods and services for local communities.
