The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun recruiting drivers for the Government’s upcoming taxi service — a major initiative aimed at easing long-standing transport challenges in the Greater Malé Region.
According to MTCC, a total of 407 drivers will be hired for the new service, with 122 positions allocated for part-time applicants. The company said priority will be given to individuals already listed in the Taxi Drivers Register maintained by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
Applications are now open, with the deadline set for December.
The Government is partnering with MTCC to introduce the new taxi line as part of broader efforts to modernise urban mobility in Malé, Hulhumalé, and Vilimalé, where residents frequently face difficulty securing available taxis. As part of the rollout, authorities have allocated three plots in Hulhumalé for parking spaces and operational facilities.
The service will operate exclusively with electric vehicles (EVs) and will be supported by a dedicated ride-hailing mobile application. MTCC said the platform will include features commonly found in global transport services, offering commuters a more seamless and efficient experience. The taxi line is expected to function 24 hours a day to ensure reliable availability throughout the capital.
Officials say the initiative will introduce a modern, environmentally friendly transport option, helping to reduce congestion and improve mobility for thousands of residents in the Greater Malé Area.
