The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has begun work on a new sewerage system in the newly populated area of Thundi, Laamu Gan, marking a major step forward in improving essential infrastructure for the growing community. The project was officially inaugurated at a ceremony held in Gan, attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The launch was officiated by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muthalib and MWSC’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed.
The project will establish a complete sewerage network for the Thundi area, providing residents with a safe and modern sanitation system. The works include the installation of the main sewerage network, construction of pumping lines and sea outfall systems, and the development of a pump station and valve chambers. Household junctions will also be installed, connecting individual homes to the new system once completed.
Awarded by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, the project is valued at MVR 36.53 million and will be implemented by MWSC. It aims to deliver a sustainable sewerage solution that meets modern environmental and public health standards, improving living conditions for residents in one of Laamu Atoll’s key population centers.
Speaking about the initiative, MWSC said the project aligns with the government’s broader strategy to expand clean water and sanitation infrastructure across the country. The company noted that the development of safe sewerage systems is critical to protecting the environment, particularly in rapidly developing islands such as Gan.
The launch of the Thundi sewerage project forms part of President Muizzu’s wider national development agenda, which focuses on upgrading essential services and facilities in outer islands. Once complete, the new system will significantly enhance sanitation, reduce environmental risks, and contribute to the long-term health and sustainability of the Laamu Gan community.
