In a solemn tribute to the devastating tsunami disaster that struck the Maldives on December 26, 2004, a moment of silence will be observed throughout the country tomorrow at 9:23 AM. This gesture is in accordance with a directive from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, which has called upon all government ministries to honor the memory of those who perished or went missing during the catastrophe.
The circular, disseminated to all government bodies, urges participation from both civil service employees and political staff in this observance. The day of remembrance falls on National Unity Day, commemorating the collective resilience and solidarity demonstrated by Maldivians in the aftermath of the disaster.
Reflecting on that fateful Sunday two decades ago, the Maldives endured its most severe natural disaster following a massive earthquake near Sumatra, Indonesia. The subsequent tsunami ravaged numerous countries globally, with the Maldives among the hardest hit. The waves impacted 191 islands, completely submerging some.
The tragedy claimed lives across 28 islands in 13 atolls, with Dhaalu Atoll suffering significantly. Thirteen individuals lost their lives within this atoll alone: eight from Dh. Gemendhoo, two from Dh. Rinbudhoo, and one from Dh. Vaanee. This commemoration serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the enduring unity of the Maldivian people.
