National athletes get medical protection as President Muizzu rolls out insurance scheme

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

A long-standing demand of Maldivian athletes was fulfilled today with the official launch of a specialized health insurance scheme, reinforcing President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to safeguarding those who represent the nation in sport.

Announcing the milestone on social media, President Muizzu confirmed that health insurance coverage has now been extended to 385 athletes and officials across 18 national sports associations, marking a historic first for the country’s sporting sector.

The scheme provides comprehensive medical coverage for injuries sustained during domestic competitions, as well as international tournaments and overseas training programmes, ensuring athletes are protected both at home and abroad. The initiative directly addresses years of concern from sports bodies and athletes over the lack of structured medical security.

By institutionalising athlete health protection, the government is positioning sports development as a national priority, recognising that sustained international success depends on athlete welfare, security, and long-term support.

The launch is widely seen as a transformative step for Maldivian sports, offering athletes the confidence to compete at the highest levels while knowing their medical well-being is fully backed by the state.
