New Entry Rules for India and Sri Lanka: What Maldivian Travelers Need to Know

By Hussain Shinan Published October 14, 2025

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent travel advisory for Maldivian citizens traveling to India and Sri Lanka, urging travelers to stay informed and comply with new immigration procedures being introduced by both neighboring countries this month.

According to the Ministry, the new requirements — which take effect in October — are procedural changes aimed at streamlining border entry processes, and do not alter existing visa arrangements for Maldivian citizens.

New Entry Requirement for India

Beginning 10 October, all travelers entering India are required to complete an online e-arrival card prior to their arrival. The form must be filled out within 72 hours before departure, through the official portal at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival/.

The Ministry clarified that this update does not affect the current visa exemption for Maldivian nationals, but stressed that completing the e-arrival process is now mandatory for all passengers traveling to India.

Sri Lanka to Implement ETA Requirement

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will introduce a similar digital requirement starting 15 October, under which all incoming travelers must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the country.

Maldivian citizens heading to Sri Lanka are advised to complete the ETA application between 48 and 24 hours prior to departure via https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated that this change also does not modify existing visa policies between the two nations, but compliance is essential to avoid delays at immigration checkpoints.

Government Urges Travelers to Prepare in Advance

The Ministry has strongly encouraged all Maldivians planning trips to India or Sri Lanka to familiarize themselves with the new digital procedures and ensure all required forms are submitted well ahead of their travel dates.

It warned that failure to complete the online documentation may result in travel disruptions or delays upon arrival.

The advisory emphasized that adherence to the updated requirements is “crucial for facilitating smooth travel and avoiding potential inconveniences.”
