State Trading Organization (STO) has confirmed that a new shipment of cooking gas has arrived in the Maldives and is now being released to the market, restoring normal supply levels after recent constraints.
In a statement shared with the media, STO said that 10kg gas cylinders are once again available to the public through its subsidiary Maldives Gas, following weeks of limited distribution driven by increased demand.
The company had earlier introduced temporary measures to manage supply, including the sale of smaller 5kg cylinders at discounted rates in place of the standard cylinders. With the arrival of the latest shipment, STO said these restrictions have now been lifted and regular sales have resumed.
Officials noted that demand for cooking gas had risen in recent weeks, partly due to global market pressures linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. These fluctuations affected supply chains and required careful management of available stock.
STO said it continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure that essential services remain uninterrupted, adding that maintaining a steady supply of fuel and gas remains a priority for the government.
Authorities also highlighted that current storage capacity for gas in the Greater Malé area stands at approximately 1,000 tonnes, with additional storage maintained by private supplier Villa Gas. Both parties are working in coordination to meet national demand.
To strengthen long-term supply resilience, the government is also developing plans for an additional 1,500-tonne gas storage facility in the Malé region.
Officials say these efforts are aimed at preventing future shortages and ensuring stable access to cooking gas despite ongoing volatility in global energy markets.
