The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has asked the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to file criminal charges against police officers involved in the investigation of the “N. Holhudhoo Zakiyya death” case, after the oversight body found negligence during its inquiry.
In a referral sent to the PGO, the NIC alleges the officers committed multiple offences arising from their handling of the investigation, including:
- Inappropriate conduct in official duties,
- Misuse of official position or influence,
- Obstruction of justice
- Obstruction of law enforcement and other state functions.
The NIC’s request follows its independent review of the police investigation. The PGO will now assess the file and determine whether the evidentiary threshold is met to prosecute. If charges are filed, the matter will proceed to trial under the Criminal Procedure framework.
No timeline has been announced for the PGO’s decision. The Maldives Police Service and the PGO had not issued public comments at the time of publication.
