The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a white alert this morning for nine atolls, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
According to the advisory, the alert covers areas from Haa Alif Atoll to Kaafu Atoll and will remain in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. today. Winds in these regions may reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, particularly during cloud formations associated with thunderstorms.
Earlier in the day, a separate white alert was also issued for the northern atolls, effective from 4:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. This marks a continuation of unstable weather conditions affecting much of the northern and central Maldives.
The MET Office advises residents, travelers, and seafarers to exercise caution, as heavy rain and strong winds could disrupt travel and increase risks at sea. White alerts are typically issued when significant weather changes are expected but do not yet pose severe or widespread danger.
The Maldives is currently in the southwest monsoon season, which often brings periods of heavy rain, rough seas, and strong winds, particularly in the northern atolls.
