Maldives Customs has successfully intercepted a large drug shipment valued at MVR 877,600, which was being smuggled into the country by air. The seizure took place following a thorough inspection of a shipment containing common goods that arrived from Thailand on Saturday night.
Customs authorities revealed that the drugs were cleverly concealed in 20 separate packets within the shipment. Preliminary tests indicated that the seized substance was cannabis. The total weight of the drugs amounted to 1,097 grams.
In line with protocol, the drugs have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation. This latest interception is part of an ongoing effort by authorities to combat drug smuggling, which continues to be a significant concern in the country.
This bust comes just days after Customs thwarted another major smuggling attempt. On March 2, drugs worth MVR 6.7 million were seized during an operation targeting sea-based smuggling routes.
The Maldives government, recognizing the severity of the drug problem, has been ramping up efforts to tackle the issue. This includes strengthening the country’s rehabilitation services to support affected individuals and prevent further incidents of drug smuggling.
As the battle against illegal substances intensifies, authorities remain vigilant in their mission to protect the nation’s borders and ensure the safety and wellbeing of its citizens.
