The Maldives Police Service has publicly summoned Ahmed Amir, a well known local surfer widely recognized by the nickname “Booga,” in connection with an investigation into alleged social media posts deemed insulting to Islam and damaging to national religious unity.
In an official notice, police confirmed that the investigation centers on content circulated across various social media platforms that allegedly disparages the religion of Islam, undermines the religious cohesion of Maldivian citizens, and calls for the dissolution of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
Ahmed Amir, 51, registered at H. Filikurige in Malé and holding ID card number A094541, has been classified as a suspect and is required to appear for questioning. Authorities stated that his current whereabouts are unknown and that attempts to serve a direct summons were unsuccessful.
As a result, the notice was issued under Article 27 of the Regulation on Police Procedures for Criminal Investigations, which allows law enforcement to summon individuals through public announcement when formal service cannot be completed.
Police have instructed Amir, also known as Booga, to present himself at the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building on 10 March 2026 at 16:00 hours.
The Maldives, constitutionally defined as a 100 percent Muslim nation, maintains strict legal protections for Islam. Authorities have repeatedly stressed that actions perceived as insulting the religion or threatening religious unity will be investigated and pursued under existing laws.
