The Maldives Police Service has demonstrated its strict adherence to custodial care standards and human rights obligations following the hospitalization of Kendhoo constituency Member of Parliament Mauroof Zakir, underscoring the institution’s commitment to detainee welfare and lawful procedure.
According to an official Police statement, MP Mauroof was taken into custody on 11 December 2025 at 12:24 p.m. During his time in detention, he proactively requested a medical consultation. Police immediately facilitated the request, arranging an assessment by the on-duty custodial doctor in line with established protocols.

Following the medical assessment, and acting solely on professional medical advice, Police transferred MP Mauroof to hospital for further examination. Authorities clarified that the medical referral was routine, precautionary, and entirely unrelated to any incident during arrest or custody. MP Mauroof was subsequently released from police custody on medical grounds after hospitalization.
The Police Service reiterated that the safety, dignity, and well-being of every individual in custody remain a core operational priority, governed by law, established procedures, and international human rights standards. The swift medical response, Police said, reflects the institution’s zero-tolerance approach toward neglect and its emphasis on responsible custodial management.
Police further cautioned against the spread of unverified medical claims, highlighting that speculation involving private health information poses legal and ethical risks and can undermine public trust. The statement called on media and the public to rely on official sources and uphold principles of responsible reporting and medical confidentiality.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the Maldives Police Service assured the public that accurate updates will continue to be provided through official channels, reinforcing confidence in the institution’s professionalism and respect for the rule of law.
