In a move aimed at strengthening the integrity of the nation’s electoral process, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed two new members to the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). The new appointees, Mohamed Zahid and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed, are set to join the commission at a pivotal time as the country continues to advance its democratic processes.
The Elections Commission, a critical body established under Article 167(a) of the Constitution of the Maldives, plays an essential role in overseeing and administering elections across the nation. The appointments of Zahid and Rasheed were made in accordance with Article 168(b) of the Constitution and Section 4(a) of the Elections Commission Act (Act no. 8/2008).
During a formal ceremony held at the President’s Office today, the two newly appointed members took their oaths of office, administered by Supreme Court Justice Hon Uz Mahaz Ali Zahir. The ceremony marked the beginning of their roles, as they officially joined the ECM in ensuring the country’s elections are transparent, free, and fair.
The appointment of Zahid and Rasheed comes at a crucial moment for the ECM as it continues to oversee the electoral landscape and ensure the proper functioning of the democratic system in the Maldives. Their expertise and commitment to the values of democracy are expected to bolster the commission’s efforts to maintain a high standard of electoral integrity.
As the country moves forward with its democratic agenda, the new members’ appointment strengthens the Elections Commission’s ability to guide the electoral process and safeguard the rights of voters across the Maldives.
