President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the opening of four additional fuel stations to provide fishermen with fuel at State Trading Organization (STO) rates. The new stations, operated by Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM), are set to open tomorrow in Lhaviyani Felivaru, Gaafu Alifu Kooddoo, Kaafu Himmafushi, and Addu City Hulhumeedhoo.
The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Kaafu Atoll Gaafaru, where he emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving accessibility and affordability for fishermen. President Muizzu noted that the new fuel stations would allow fishermen to purchase fuel at prices similar to those offered to vessels operated by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) in Kooddoo and Felivaru.
Nationwide Expansion Planned
President Muizzu revealed plans to establish additional fuel stations in strategic locations across the country, aiming to make affordable fuel available to fishermen nationwide by the end of 2025.
“Listening to the voices of our fishermen and delivering on their needs remains a priority for this administration,” he said. He also announced that a new fuel station in M. Atoll would soon be operational, enabling fishermen traveling from Huvadhoo Atoll to Malé to refuel mid-journey.
Streamlining Payments to Fishermen
In addition to fuel initiatives, President Muizzu confirmed that a mechanism to disburse payments owed to fishermen within 48 hours will come into effect tomorrow. This fulfills a key presidential pledge aimed at improving the livelihoods of the nation’s fishing communities.
According to the President, MVR 38 million in payments have already been disbursed to fishermen as of this afternoon. Of this amount, MVR 32.4 million was deposited into the accounts of 196 individuals at Bank of Maldives (BML), while MVR 5.6 million was transferred to 20 individuals with accounts at Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).
Commitment to Fisheries Sector
These measures reflect the administration’s broader efforts to support the fisheries sector, which remains a vital part of the Maldivian economy. The introduction of additional fuel stations and prompt payment systems is expected to ease operational challenges faced by fishermen, ensuring a more sustainable and profitable industry.
