In his presidential address at the opening session of the People’s Majlis, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu declared that the definitive list of beneficiaries under the ‘Gedhoruverin’ (Homeowner) housing scheme will be unveiled before the onset of Ramadan, with the distribution of flats slated for completion by September.
Verification Process Nearing Completion
President Muizzu emphasized the sensitivity surrounding the verification of the list of 4,000 individuals designated to receive flats in Hulhumalé’s second phase. He assured that the ongoing verification process, conducted in accordance with directives from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), is approaching its conclusion. “With the will of Allah, the work being done to verify the authenticity of the list will be completed and the list will be announced before the end of this February,” he stated. “As the flats are completed, they will be handed over to the recipients, and all flats will be handed over to their rightful owners before the end of September this year.”
Housing Ministry’s Evaluation Strategy
The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has opted to assess only the applicants listed in the gazetted final list, rather than re-evaluating all submissions for the ‘Gedhoruverin’ scheme. This approach aims to expedite the allocation process and ensure timely delivery to eligible recipients.
Background of the ‘Gedhoruverin’ Scheme
The ‘Gedhoruverin’ housing initiative witnessed the submission of 20,697 applications during its open period, comprising 6,208 forms for two-bedroom apartments and 14,489 for three-bedroom units. The project, managed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation, encompasses the construction of 1,250 two-bedroom and 2,750 three-bedroom apartments.
Commitment to Addressing Housing Challenges
Addressing the broader housing concerns in the Maldives, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s dedication to fulfilling its housing promises. He highlighted the completion of 4,000 flats, financed through a loan from the Indian Exim Bank, as a significant step toward mitigating housing shortages. The president also underscored the importance of adhering to ACC guidelines to ensure a transparent and fair allocation process.
The government’s pledge to publish the final list before Ramadan and complete the handover by September reflects its commitment to providing adequate housing for its citizens and resolving longstanding housing issues in the nation.
