President Muizzu Declares War on Drugs: Death Penalty Proposed for Traffickers

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 30, 2025

In a powerful social media post, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug abuse in the Maldives—declaring a bold push to impose the death penalty on those convicted of importing or trafficking narcotics.

Describing the war on drugs as one of his government’s top national priorities, the President stated that the current generation must be protected from the devastating grip of narcotics. He emphasized the urgent need to build a society free from drugs and create a future where Maldivian youth can thrive without fear of addiction or exploitation.

To that end, President Muizzu revealed that the he has officially instructed relevant institutions to further study the bill presently submitted to the Parliament to amend the Narcotics Act. The goal is to incorporate the harshest possible penalties—including capital punishment—for major drug offences, as practiced in several other nations.

The proposed policy marks a significant escalation in the national fight against drugs, reflecting the public’s growing demand for justice and accountability. As the legislative process advances, the nation watches closely—expecting swift action and resolute enforcement to ensure the safety and future of all Maldivians.
