President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to understanding and resolving the challenges faced by fishermen, emphasizing the sector’s vital role in the Maldivian economy. The President made these remarks during his visit to Devvadhoo Island as part of his ongoing tour of islands in Huvadhoo Atoll.
Highlighting the resilience of the fisheries sector amid external economic pressures, President Muizzu stated that with the right investments and policy focus, the industry could become the nation’s largest contributor to GDP. He described fisheries as a cornerstone of local wealth generation, firmly controlled by Maldivian communities.
“The fisheries industry is less vulnerable to external disruptions compared to other sectors and holds immense potential for growth. With collaborative effort, it can become a primary driver of the national economy,” the President noted.
President Muizzu also shared that the government has already taken steps to expand the fisheries sector by securing foreign aid and allocating funds from the national budget. He assured fishermen that his administration would address their concerns and implement solutions through consultation and dialogue with stakeholders in the industry.
The President’s remarks underscore the administration’s broader efforts to support economic sectors that sustain livelihoods in island communities. His tour of the atolls aims to engage with local communities and ensure that national development initiatives align with their needs and aspirations.
