President Muizzu forms crisis committee as Middle East tensions escalate

Maldives has moved swiftly to safeguard national interests as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today established a special ministerial committee to address and mitigate potential impacts on Maldivian citizens arising from the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The announcement was made in a social media post by Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, confirming that the committee will coordinate a whole-of-government response to emerging geopolitical and economic risks.

The committee is chaired by Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and brings together key portfolios central to national security, economic resilience and public welfare. Members include:

  • Moosa Zameer, Minister of Finance
  • Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Economic Development and Trade
  • Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation
  • Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology
  • Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism
  • Ali Haidar Ahmed, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development
  • Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs

The formation of this high-level task force signals the administration’s proactive stance in anticipating disruptions that could affect food security, fuel supply, aviation routes, tourism flows and broader economic stability amid intensifying regional tensions.

According to the statement, relevant ministries will continue to provide the public with timely updates as assessments evolve and mitigation measures are implemented.

The establishment of the committee reflects a coordinated national response aimed at protecting Maldivian citizens, strengthening institutional readiness and ensuring stability during a period of heightened international uncertainty.
