President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed the Maldives on Monday evening on an official visit to Bangladesh, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh. President Muizzu is scheduled to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the country’s new government, which will be held on 17 February 2026.

The official visit will span from 16 to 18 February 2026. During his stay, President Muizzu is also expected to hold high-level discussions with the newly elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing shared regional interests.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh were formally established on 22 September 1978. Since then, the two countries have maintained friendly ties, with cooperation extending across labour, trade, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

President Muizzu’s participation in the inaugural ceremony underscores the Maldives’ commitment to reinforcing diplomatic relations and engaging constructively with regional partners in South Asia.
