In a proud moment marking the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu conferred the prestigious Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I) on esteemed businessman and statesman Qasim Ibrahim, in recognition of his decades-long contributions to the nation’s development.
The honour was presented at the official Independence Day ceremony held this morning, solidifying Qasim’s legacy as a central figure in shaping the Maldives’ economic, social, and political fabric. Qasim, who previously received the Order of the Dignified Rule of Muleege Dynasty (O.D.R.M.D), becomes one of the few citizens to have been decorated with both highly revered titles.
Widely acknowledged as a pioneer of the modern Maldivian economy, Qasim’s journey began in 1976 when, at just 26 years old, he mortgaged his own home to secure a modest loan of MVR 15,000. Operating from a corner of the Thaa Atoll Store, he laid the foundation of a business empire that would later transform the nation’s commerce and tourism sectors. Today, he stands tall as one of the country’s most prominent resort developers and a key force behind the Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Beyond business, Qasim is also known for his unwavering commitment to social welfare. His generous support for Maldivians seeking overseas medical treatment and his dedication to improving educational access have touched countless lives across the islands.
Qasim’s influence extended into national governance as well. As Minister of Finance and Treasury under President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, he also served as Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority, representing the country at global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF. Later, as President of the Special Majlis during the historic constitutional reform process, he oversaw the drafting and ratification of the modern Constitution that underpins Maldivian democracy today.
His previous accolades include the General Service Incentive Award in 1988 and 1995, the National Award of Honour in 2007, and the O.D.R.M.D in 2013—each a testament to his diverse and far-reaching service to the nation.
By bestowing the O.D.R.I, President Muizzu has not only recognised Qasim Ibrahim’s extraordinary journey but also underscored his administration’s commitment to honouring those who have shaped the Maldives through resilience, innovation, and patriotism.
As the nation celebrates six decades of independence, the ceremony served as a powerful reminder that true national heroes are those who have dedicated their lives to building a stronger, more prosperous Maldives.
