In a gesture underscoring the Maldives’ dedication to fostering international relations, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed hosted an Iftar at the Official Residence, Muleeaage, welcoming resident high commissioners, ambassadors, and representatives of international organizations.
The evening began with dignitaries paying their respects to the President and First Lady, engaging in cordial exchanges with fellow guests. The event was further graced by the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, and other senior government officials, reflecting the administration’s emphasis on diplomatic engagement.
Since assuming office, President Muizzu has adeptly navigated the complex landscape of international diplomacy. His administration has made significant strides in strengthening bilateral relations with key global players.
In November 2023, President Muizzu embarked on his inaugural international trip to Turkey, accepting an invitation from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The leaders held official talks, culminating in the signing of an “Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation,” marking a new chapter in Maldives-Turkey relations.
The Maldives’ relationship with the United States has also flourished under President Muizzu’s leadership. The U.S. recognized this by sending a Presidential Delegation, led by Administrator Samantha Power, to attend his inauguration. Subsequent discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer have focused on strengthening bilateral partnerships, underscoring mutual commitment to shared goals.
In line with his campaign promise to uphold national sovereignty, President Muizzu addressed the presence of foreign military personnel in the Maldives. By May 2024, all Indian military personnel had been withdrawn, reflecting his administration’s commitment to an independent foreign policy.
Further solidifying international alliances, President Muizzu accepted an invitation from President Xi Jinping and visited China in January 2024. This visit resulted in the signing of twenty new agreements, including those pertaining to financial and military assistance, highlighting China’s role as a valued ally.
The Iftar event at Muleeaage not only honored the traditional practice of breaking fast during Ramadan but also served as a testament to the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to global diplomacy. By bringing together international representatives, President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to fostering harmonious and mutually beneficial relationships on the world stage.
