President Muizzu inaugurates 1,400-capacity Masjid al-Yusuf al-Barbari in Malé

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 10 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated Masjid al-Yusuf al-Barbari in Malé, further advancing his administration’s drive to expand prayer capacity in the capital. The mosque was formally opened during Asr prayer today, underscoring the government’s continued prioritization of Islamic infrastructure in densely populated urban areas.

Constructed by the state through a private contractor, the newly developed three-storey mosque can accommodate up to 1,400 worshippers simultaneously. Located in Malé, where demand for space during Friday prayers and Ramadan remains consistently high, the facility is expected to significantly ease congestion in surrounding mosques.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, alongside senior government officials and members of the public. Following the opening prayer, President Muizzu toured the mosque’s facilities, inspecting its spacious prayer halls and modern amenities.

The opening of Masjid al-Yusuf al-Barbari forms part of a wider national initiative to construct and upgrade mosques across the Maldives. Several additional mosque projects are currently underway in the Greater Malé Area through grant assistance, while newly built mosques in various islands have already been inaugurated in time for Ramadan.

Under President Muizzu’s leadership, mosque construction remains a national priority, strengthening community cohesion and ensuring that places of worship keep pace with the country’s rapid urban growth.
