President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and India’s Minister of Civil Aviation and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, H.E. Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, jointly inaugurated the redeveloped Hanimaadhoo International Airport today, marking a landmark in the Maldives’ aviation and regional development landscape.
The state-of-the-art airport, completed under the Maldives–India development partnership, includes an extended runway capable of handling larger aircraft, a modern passenger terminal, and advanced aviation infrastructure designed to meet international standards.

The new facility will serve as a major gateway to the northern atolls, boosting tourism, trade, and investment while improving air connectivity within the region and to international destinations. The redevelopment also underscores the Maldives’ commitment to balanced national growth and sustainable infrastructure development.

Funded through a line of credit from the Export-Import Bank of India, the Hanimaadhoo project stands among the largest investments in northern Maldives. It is expected to play a pivotal role in decentralizing economic activity and positioning the northern region as a strategic aviation and commercial hub in the Indian Ocean.
