President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has taken his campaign directly to the people, leading a door to door outreach in Maafannu West as the country prepares for the Local Council Elections on April 4.

Acting in his capacity as leader of the People’s National Congress, the President visited households across the constituency and engaged with residents in face to face discussions, underscoring the ruling party’s confidence and momentum ahead of the polls. He was joined by Cabinet Ministers, senior party officials, members of the PNC Parliamentary Group, and mayoral candidate Moosa Ali Jaleel, along with contenders for the Malé City Council and Women’s Development Committees.
The PNC has already secured a significant early advantage. With no opposing candidates or withdrawals in several constituencies, the party has won 69 seats unopposed, including 28 local council positions. The uncontested victories reflect strong grassroots backing and organizational strength across multiple islands.

The April 4 vote will determine 626 island councillors and 52 city councillors nationwide. An equal number of representatives will be elected to Women’s Development Committees. According to official figures, 2,962 candidates from six political parties are contesting. A total of 294,937 eligible voters, 144,527 women and 150,410 men, are registered to cast their ballots.
In addition to council and WDC races, citizens will participate in a national referendum seeking public opinion on synchronizing future Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The proposal, if endorsed, could mark a significant shift in the country’s electoral framework.

With large scale participation, early seat gains, and direct engagement at the community level, the ruling party is positioning itself as the driving force in shaping local governance and the broader political landscape.
