In a vibrant display of unity and festivity, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is set to transform the Maldives into a luminous celebration for Eid al-Fitr. Building upon traditions established during his tenure as Mayor of Malé, where he first introduced the practice of adorning the capital with colorful lights, President Muizzu has expanded this initiative nationwide, ensuring that both Malé and 36 additional administrative areas across the atolls will bask in festive illuminations this year.

The Minister of State for Cities, Administrative Areas, and Public Services, Adam Shareef Umar, highlighted the collaborative efforts underway, stating, “We are currently working on installing colorful lights in Malé, with significant assistance from government companies. Additionally, we are extending this initiative to the islands in the atolls, with an additional 36 administrative areas to be illuminated this year.”
In anticipation of Eid al-Fitr, major thoroughfares in Malé—Majeedhee Magu, Ameenee Magu, and Boduthakurufaanu Magu—are already adorned with vibrant lights. Plans are also in place to erect decorative arches in various locations in the coming days, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Recognizing the importance of family and community during this auspicious period, President Muizzu has declared an extended government holiday for Eid al-Fitr. As per Directive No. 6/2025, if the Ministry of Islamic Affairs announces that the 1st of Shawwal falls on Monday, March 31, 2025, government offices will be closed from March 31 to April 3, 2025. Should Eid be observed on Sunday, March 30, 2025, the holidays will extend from March 30 to April 3, 2025. This decision ensures that employees can enjoy uninterrupted time with their families during the celebrations.
The government’s commitment to fostering a joyous and inclusive Eid is further evident through the organization of various activities in collaboration with multiple government offices. These events aim to engage citizens of all ages, with a particular focus on children, who have traditionally shown great enthusiasm for the festive lights and communal celebrations.
President Muizzu’s dedication to enhancing the cultural fabric of the Maldives is evident in these initiatives, reflecting his vision of unity and shared joy during significant religious occasions. As the nation prepares to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the illuminated streets and extended holidays stand as a testament to the administration’s efforts to enrich the lives of its citizens and strengthen communal bonds.
