President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has initiated a major upgrade to Thulusdhoo’s energy infrastructure by attending the foundation stone laying ceremony for the island’s new powerhouse project, which will be developed by the State Electric Company Limited, STELCO.
Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim officiated the foundation stone laying ceremony, acknowledging the rapid growth in community and commercial energy needs. Senior officials from government and STELCO were also present for the milestone event.

The project is designed to support increasing electricity demand driven by population expansion and tourism development in Kaafu Atoll. It includes the construction of a modern powerhouse, a customer service building, and a boundary wall.
Sunvil Pvt Ltd will lead the works, which officially began on 06 October 2025. Completion is scheduled for 30 March 2026. The total project investment stands at MVR 11,954,501.00.

By personally attending the ceremony, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to strengthening essential utilities and ensuring reliable service delivery in growing island communities. Once operational, the new powerhouse is expected to significantly enhance electrical capacity and improve service reliability for Thulusdhoo residents and businesses.
