President Muizzu: “PayPal Services Will Be Available in the Maldives Within the Coming Year”

By Ahmed Ashraf Published October 15, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that PayPal services will be launched in the Maldives within the next year — marking a historic step toward realizing his administration’s vision of a digitally empowered, globally connected economy.

The President made the announcement while addressing a public gathering in Komandoo, Shaviyani Atoll, during his ongoing atoll tour. He revealed that Ooredoo Fintech, a subsidiary of Ooredoo Group based in Qatar, will serve as PayPal’s local partner in introducing the service to Maldivian users.

The initiative fulfills one of President Muizzu’s key campaign pledges to expand the Maldivian economy and provide citizens with greater access to global digital markets. He noted that, as part of the government’s “Creative Economy” initiative, Maldivians will soon have the ability to buy and sell online across international platforms, opening doors for freelancers, small businesses, and entrepreneurs nationwide.

“Today, it has been officially announced that PayPal has begun the process to provide its services to the Maldives through Qatar’s Ooredoo Fintech,” President Muizzu said. “We are hopeful that this partnership will enable the launch of PayPal within the coming year.”

The President emphasized that his administration’s focus is on putting economic power directly into the hands of Maldivians. He reiterated his commitment to building an economy where citizens can independently participate in the global marketplace, supported by modern technology and secure payment systems.

Underscoring this broader vision, President Muizzu declared that the coming year will be marked as the National Year of Maldivian Productivity — a campaign to encourage innovation, creativity, and greater economic participation across the nation.

The upcoming introduction of PayPal, in partnership with Ooredoo Fintech, is expected to bring the Maldives in line with global e-commerce standards, facilitating secure online transactions for businesses and individuals alike. The move reflects President Muizzu’s ongoing efforts to modernize the country’s financial ecosystem and ensure that digital inclusion becomes a cornerstone of national progress.
