President Muizzu presses forward on Malé modernisation, questions council’s park neglect

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 2 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu declared on Thursday night that his administration is working “day and night” to honour its commitments, underscoring what he described as measurable progress across key sectors over the past two years.

Addressing a Taraveeh gathering organised by the People’s National Congress at Artificial Beach in Malé, the President reaffirmed that delivering tangible outcomes for citizens remains the government’s foremost priority.

“I am working with great sincerity, and the entire government is dedicated to fulfilling these pledges and delivering results. We are working day and night to achieve that outcome. In this regard, a significant amount of work has been accomplished over the last two years,” President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said.

He stressed that his recent Presidential Address to the People’s Majlis detailed the nation’s economic and social standing using verified statistics and sector-wide data, presenting what he described as a transparent account of the country’s current trajectory.

Boduthakurufaanu Magu upgrade launched with state funds

Turning to infrastructure, President Muizzu outlined plans for the comprehensive redevelopment of roads across Malé under a grant arrangement with the Government of China. While procedural and technical stages of that project are ongoing, he said the administration has already moved ahead with urgent improvements using domestic financing.

The redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, one of the capital’s most congested arteries, has commenced under the state budget to ease traffic and public hardship.

“While the stages of the project to develop all Malé roads under Chinese aid are progressing, we have started the work on one of the most congested roads using the government budget. Even with the portion completed so far, the residents of Malé are experiencing significant ease,” he noted.

The road modernisation initiative forms part of the administration’s broader urban reform agenda aimed at improving mobility, safety and drainage resilience in the densely populated capital.

Concerns over park maintenance

President Muizzu also voiced concern over what he described as insufficient efforts by the Malé City Council to maintain public parks initiated during his tenure as Mayor.

He cited Sultan Park as a key example, stating that although the central government is currently undertaking renovation works, such responsibilities fall within the Council’s strategic mandate.

According to the President, several public recreational spaces have deteriorated over the past two years due to a lack of sustained maintenance, depriving residents of properly managed green areas in the capital.

The remarks come as the administration continues to position infrastructure renewal and service delivery at the centre of its governance agenda, framing accelerated implementation as proof of its pledge-driven leadership.
