During an official visit to Hoarafushi in Haa Alif Atoll, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized his administration’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law. He assured citizens that all constitutional rights will be fully protected, while cautioning against actions that contravene legal frameworks.
“Every citizen is entitled to rights not prohibited by the Constitution or law,” President Muizzu stated. “However, engaging in activities outside these bounds is not a right afforded to anyone.”
He further highlighted the collective responsibility in fostering national unity and solidarity, underscoring that the government will prevent any attempts to disrupt peace or hinder development. “Obstructing our nation’s progress and future is not a right anyone holds. I am committed to fulfilling my duty in this regard,” he affirmed.
These remarks come as the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) prepares for a significant protest in Malé on January 31, under the banner “In Defense of the Constitution.” This planned demonstration follows their large-scale rally in December 2024, where the MDP voiced concerns over recent constitutional amendments and called for their annulment, citing threats to the sovereignty of the Maldivian people.
MDP leaders have emphasized that the upcoming protest aims to ensure government accountability and safeguard constitutional rights. They are rallying supporters to join the cause, highlighting the importance of defending democracy and sovereignty in the Maldives.
As political activities intensify, President Muizzu’s administration remains steadfast in its stance against unlawful actions, reiterating that while freedom of expression and assembly are protected, they must be exercised within the confines of the law.
