President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed today that integrity, transparency, and accountability will remain the pillars guiding the Maldives’ national development, declaring a renewed and uncompromising stance against corruption as the country observed International Anti Corruption Day.
In a formal message, the President recalled the Maldives’ accession to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in 2007, describing it as a solemn national commitment. He stressed that his Administration stands firmly dedicated to upholding the Convention’s principles with unwavering transparency and resolve.
Highlighting the gravity of systemic corruption, President Muizzu said it threatens the rule of law, disrupts sustainable development, weakens democratic governance, and undermines the fundamental rights of citizens. He underlined that the government maintains zero tolerance towards corruption and is determined to dismantle the systems that enable it.
At the core of the Administration’s anti corruption drive is the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation programme, designed to modernise public service delivery, eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies, and ensure transparency across all government transactions. The President also spotlighted the Anti Corruption Commission’s strengthened role, including asset recovery initiatives, the formulation of a model law, and upcoming amendments to key legislation such as the Penal Code.
Preventive reforms are being advanced simultaneously. These include the 20-year National Development Plan aligned with the National Anti Corruption Plan, the Himmi Corruption Risk Self Assessment Toolkit for public institutions and State-Owned Enterprises, and the establishment of a dedicated Anti Corruption Academy to equip institutions nationwide with trained professionals who champion integrity and good governance.
President Muizzu further praised the efforts of civil society organisations and the UNCAC review mechanisms for enhancing social accountability and reinforcing international cooperation. While government action remains central, he affirmed that the fight against corruption requires active participation from every citizen and the private sector. He noted that the nation’s youth continue to inspire confidence in the future being built.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu called on the public to remain vigilant, speak out, and uphold honesty and transparency. He reiterated the Administration’s commitment to ensuring a Maldives where integrity thrives, democratic governance is strengthened, the rule of law is upheld, and justice remains fair and impartial.
International Anti Corruption Day is marked annually on 9 December, commemorating the 2003 adoption of the UN Convention against Corruption by the UN General Assembly.
