In a decisive move to enhance Malé’s urban landscape, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared the commencement of a comprehensive development project for the remaining unpaved segment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu. This significant initiative is slated to begin immediately following the conclusion of Ramadan.
Historically, during President Abdulla Yameen’s tenure, substantial portions of Boduthakurufaanu Magu underwent paving and development under the guidance of then-Housing Minister Dr. Muizzu. Despite these efforts, the stretch extending from the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal to Rasfannu remained untouched.
Addressing attendees at the recent inauguration of the newly developed Izzuddin Faalan, President Muizzu articulated the government’s commitment to completing this vital roadway. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been entrusted with executing the project, which aims to transform the road from the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal to the Local Market into a dual carriageway, featuring two lanes in each direction.
To accommodate the expanded roadway, innovative engineering solutions, including sheet piling, will be employed to reclaim sections of the adjacent lagoon. This approach not only broadens the thoroughfare but also optimizes land use in the densely populated capital.
The previous administration had earmarked this area for development and had designated MTCC to undertake the task. However, the project did not advance beyond the planning stages.
Beyond the immediate roadworks, the current government envisions a holistic redevelopment of the area. Plans are underway to construct a modern fish market at the existing Local Market site and to relocate the Malé Port to Gulhifalhu. This strategic move will facilitate the transformation of the current North Harbor area into a vibrant urban space.
President Muizzu also highlighted a broader infrastructural agenda, announcing that all other roads in Malé, as well as those in Vilimalé, are slated for development under Chinese grant aid. These projects are poised to commence in the near future, signaling a new era of urban renewal and international collaboration for the Maldives.
This ambitious infrastructure overhaul underscores the administration’s dedication to fostering economic growth, enhancing public amenities, and improving the quality of life for Malé’s residents.
