President Mohamed Muizzu is expected to undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka next month, according to reports from Sri Lankan media, as both countries look to deepen cooperation across key sectors.
The upcoming visit comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, with particular attention being given to expanding collaboration in the fisheries industry.
In the lead-up to the visit, the Maldivian ambassador to Sri Lanka has held discussions with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Fisheries, focusing on opportunities for joint initiatives. Among the ideas explored is the potential to combine the Maldives’ fresh fish supply with Sri Lanka’s established canning industry to develop new products for the market.
Reports indicate that both sides have expressed interest in producing Ceylon-branded canned fish and other value-added seafood products tailored specifically for consumers in the Maldives. Such initiatives are seen as a way to enhance trade while leveraging the comparative strengths of both countries.
Discussions have also included the possibility of establishing a direct supply mechanism for Sri Lankan fish products to the Maldives. This would streamline the current import process, which often involves third-party intermediaries and routing through hubs such as Dubai.
The Maldives and Sri Lanka share a long history of diplomatic relations, dating back to 1965 — the same year the Maldives gained independence. Over the decades, the two countries have maintained close ties in areas including trade, education, and fisheries, with the upcoming visit expected to further reinforce this partnership.
