President Muizzu unveils plan to equip Maldives healthcare facilities with top-tier medical machinery

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 21, 2025

In a recent address to the residents of Angolhitheemu, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled plans to equip Maldivian healthcare facilities with top-tier medical machinery. The initiative aims to enhance the quality and reliability of healthcare services across the nation.

President Muizzu emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the continuous operation of medical equipment. He outlined strategies to maintain an uninterrupted supply of necessary reagents and resources, stating, “By purchasing [equipment] in large quantities for many islands at once, installing them, and ensuring the availability of reagents and resources needed to operate them… when we bring such brands, the supplies needed to run them will also be easily available.”

Addressing current challenges, the President noted the difficulties in sourcing spare parts for existing equipment brands, leading to high maintenance costs. He highlighted that investing in high-quality machinery, even with a higher initial expense, would result in long-term savings and improved services for citizens.

This announcement aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to procure high-quality medicines in bulk, making them accessible to the public at affordable prices. Since July, medicines meeting World Health Organization (WHO) and Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) standards have been imported directly from manufacturers, ensuring safety from production to patient delivery.

The initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to elevating healthcare standards in the Maldives, focusing on both medical equipment and pharmaceutical supplies to provide better quality services nationwide.
