Martyrs’ Day holds deep historical significance in the Maldives, commemorating Sultan Ali VI, who valiantly fought against Portuguese invaders and fell in battle in 1558. Recognized as a national hero, his sacrifice remains a defining moment in the country’s history.
The Maldives officially began observing Martyrs’ Day on the first day of Sha’ban in the Islamic calendar year 1400, which corresponds to June 14, 1980. The occasion serves as a solemn reminder of the resilience and patriotism that have shaped the nation’s independence.
As the country reflects on its history, President Muizzu’s message highlights the enduring duty of Maldivians to safeguard the legacy of the fallen and work towards a future that upholds the ideals they fought for.
