President Muizzu urges voters to prioritize national interest over family ties in council elections

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 2 hours ago

President Mohamed Muizzu has called on voters to place the broader interests and development of their communities above traditional family influences when casting their ballots in the upcoming Maldives Local Council Elections 2026.

Tonight speaking during campaign rally organized by the ruling party People’s National Congress, the President acknowledged that local council elections in the Maldives have historically been shaped by strong family affiliations, where voting decisions are often influenced by relatives and close social ties.

However, he stressed that voters must look beyond such considerations and focus on what benefits the wider community.

“Local council elections in the Maldives are typically characterized by strong familial influences, where voting decisions are often based on family ties,” President Muizzu said.

“While this remains the prevailing practice in our country, it is our collective responsibility to prioritize the broader interests and development of the entire city or island,” he added.

The President emphasized that decisions made at the ballot box should be guided by the long-term welfare of communities and the future of younger generations.

“Making decisions based on the common good is essential for our well-being and for the future of our children and generations to come,” he said.

Local council elections play a crucial role in the Maldives’ decentralized governance system, with councils responsible for managing local development initiatives, community services, and administrative functions across islands and cities. Political parties have intensified campaign activities nationwide as the April 4 vote approaches.
