President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has addressed recent public criticisms regarding the ban on vaping, clarifying that the government’s initiatives to curb ingrained negative habits are not meant to inconvenience the public. During his visit to Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, President Muizzu highlighted in Gaafu Dhaalu Vaadhoo that true development transcends visible projects.
He emphasized that alongside infrastructure projects, nurturing moral values, raising children responsibly, and fostering a society that encourages positive actions represent genuine progress. The President stated that when longstanding issues persist, it is imperative to internally resolve and externally demonstrate that continuation is unnecessary. He urged individuals to refuse acceptance of wrongdoing.
“The government is steadfast in this approach,” he asserted, citing recent measures such as the vaping ban from last month, increased cigarette import duties, and raising the legal age for cigarette purchases to 21. These actions aim to protect future generations and create a comprehensively developed Maldives.
President Muizzu clarified that these steps are meant to combat societal addictions and health epidemics without causing public inconvenience. He called for collective cooperation in pursuing holistic development.
“My intentions are clear,” he stated, urging unity toward achieving both tangible and intangible development goals for the Maldives. “With this mindset, we can accomplish true progress for our nation.”
