President Muizzu: “We choose reforms that deliver long-term good, not short-term popularity”

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to principled governance, emphasizing that the government’s decisions are guided by what is best for the nation rather than by short-term popularity.

Speaking during his visit to Fuvahmulah City last night, President Muizzu contrasted his government’s approach with that of previous administrations, noting that past policies often prioritized public approval over genuine progress. He stressed that his administration’s focus is on addressing the root causes of the country’s challenges through practical, forward-looking measures.

Highlighting recent public health and fiscal reforms, the President cited the national vaping ban, the increased duty on cigarettes, and the generational tobacco prohibition for those born after 2007 as examples of policies that may not appeal to everyone but serve the long-term interests of Maldivians.

President Muizzu explained that these decisions reflect a government determined to secure a healthier population and a more resilient economy, even if it means taking tough and sometimes unpopular actions. “If our goal were popularity, we would not have introduced such bold reforms,” he said, reaffirming his vision for responsible and transformative leadership.
