President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a landmark expansion of the government’s pay harmonization program, confirming that over 20,000 employees across the civil service, judiciary, and local councils will receive salary increases starting this month. The reform also introduces higher overtime pay and comprehensive adjustments to pay structures to ensure fairness and sustainability.
Speaking to residents of Fuvahmulah City, President Muizzu stated that the harmonization process was implemented following extensive research and consultation, aimed at addressing long-standing disparities in the public sector. He explained that the initiative is being rolled out over a two-year period, with remaining state institutions scheduled to receive revised salary structures next year.

Under the new framework, employees in the lowest pay grades will now earn more than MVR 7,000 per month. This marks a historic improvement and places their earnings above the limits set under the current minimum wage framework for private industries. The President emphasized that this reflects his administration’s commitment to raising living standards for government employees and recognizing their contribution to national service.
Addressing one of the most significant concerns, the President announced the relaxation of the 10 percent overtime cap. The restriction will no longer apply on Fridays, official public holidays, days declared as holidays by presidential decree, and during the last ten days of Ramadan. This ensures that employees who work extra hours are duly compensated for their service.
President Muizzu underscored that the reform not only strengthens the financial well-being of thousands of employees but also reflects a broader vision for equitable development. He reiterated that his government remains dedicated to ensuring that all Maldivians benefit from a fair, transparent, and sustainable pay system.
