In a major relief effort ahead of Ramadan, the government has successfully distributed tuna cases to 15,000 households in Malé as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s Ramadan Gift initiative. The programme, known as the Roadha Gift initiative, is designed to provide essential food supplies to families nationwide during the holy month.
Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar confirmed that the distribution process has been revamped to improve efficiency and prioritize vulnerable households. “We have adjusted the system to ensure that every household receives their provisions before Ramadan,” he said.
To manage the large crowds typically seen during such distributions, the government has introduced a token-based system. Distribution now takes place from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, a schedule chosen to avoid the intense daytime heat. Under the initiative, the government aims to reach over 82,000 households nationwide, with each receiving a case containing 48 easy-open tuna cans weighing 180 grams each.
Residents are required to present a National ID card along with a recent electricity bill to collect their tuna cases, with a maximum of three cases per person based on the number of registered electricity meters. An online token system has also been launched to allow citizens to book collection slots in advance, while in-person assistance is available at distribution centers.
Minister Umar assured the public that the distribution will continue until every eligible household has received its allocated case, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring food security during Ramadan.
President Muizzu’s initiative reflects a broader effort by his administration to support the community through practical measures during the sacred month, reinforcing the government’s pledge to provide for its citizens in times of need.
