President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the list of eligible recipients for the 4,000 flats being constructed in Hulhumalé Phase 2 under the Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme will be released before the upcoming Ramadan, which falls in March this year.
Speaking to journalists at the conclusion of his official visit to Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise to allocate flats and land plots to rightful beneficiaries without revoking any land or flats previously granted to citizens.
“I aim to complete and hand over the 4,000 flats as soon as possible. Our goal is to announce the list before Ramadan, God willing, and I strongly believe we will achieve this,” President Muizzu stated.
The President emphasized that individuals attempting to secure flats through fraudulent means, such as submitting false information or altering documents, will not be included on the final list. He assured the public that any allocations obtained through deception would be canceled.
“I promised that no land or flat given to any citizen would be taken away. However, if someone has acquired a flat or land through lies or forgery, it will be revoked,” he said in response to a question from Mihaaru News.
President Muizzu also noted that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is actively investigating claims of unfair flat allocations. He affirmed that only legitimate applicants would benefit from the housing scheme, stating, “If wrongdoing is discovered through the ACC’s investigation, I will ensure that flats are awarded only to eligible applicants, as I promised.”
The government had previously set multiple deadlines for publishing the flat allocation list last year, but the list was indefinitely postponed on November 16 after failing to meet those dates.
The Ministry of Housing recently announced that it is reviewing the list under the guidance of the Housing Advisory Committee and the Housing Consultative Committee, both of which were established based on President Muizzu’s recommendations. This review process was initiated in response to public complaints about potential irregularities in the list of recipients announced under the Hiyaa Housing Scheme.
The Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme is part of the government’s broader plan to address the nation’s housing crisis and provide affordable homes to citizens. The upcoming publication of the list is highly anticipated by the public, as many await clarity on their housing status.
