Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has initiated a criminal inquiry into the “Binveriya” and “Gedhoruveri” housing schemes amid allegations of irregularities. Controversy erupted when reports emerged that plots were allocated to individuals not listed as official beneficiaries of the Binveriya scheme, including a plot allegedly granted to the brother of HDC Managing Director Fazul Rasheed.
The Prosecutor General’s office highlighted concerns about potential breaches in the application process, recipient selection, and distribution of plots and flats. Citing Article 223 (f) of the Constitution, Prosecutor General Shareef has mandated the police and Anti-Corruption Commission to thoroughly investigate these procedures. Should any criminal activities be suspected, they are instructed to bring cases forward for prosecution.
In recognition of the public interest in this matter, the PG has stipulated that weekly progress updates be provided to ensure a prompt and comprehensive investigation.
