President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended his heartfelt condolences following the passing of Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister. Singh, a prominent figure from the opposition Congress Party, passed away last night while undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, after a sudden decline in his health. An esteemed economist, Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, and was instrumental in shaping the nation’s economic strategies.
In a social media message, President Muizzu expressed solidarity with the people of India during this difficult time, on behalf of himself and the Maldivian populace. Reflecting on Manmohan Singh’s visit to the Maldives in 2011, President Muizzu highlighted its significance for the Maldives’ economic and social development.
“Dr. Singh’s focus on progress and development, alongside his efforts to bolster the ‘Look East Policy’, significantly contributed to fostering advancement and strengthening relations across the South Asian region,” President Muizzu remarked.
